When I experience anxiety, yes I still do, these are my go-to exercises that help IMMEDIATELY:
1. Coloring / Doodling
Yup, you read that right, coloring. It sounds childish but it is completing relaxing. Not only does it give you a nostalgic feeling, but it gives you the opportunity to focus on solely one thing.
When you are feeling anxious it usually is because you are overwhelmed with thoughts, thinking about multiple things at once. Allowing your mind to focus on one simple task, it will calm your entire body down.
Here are some of my favorite coloring books for adults that I’ve mentioned in this post on depression:
- OBSESSED with this one, I love how it has so many positive messages for you!
- For my animal lovers, this one is for you 🙂
- LOVE the designs on this one!
2. Go outside and look up.
You get so involved in your day to day activities, in your daily tasks, that you forget your place in the world. You forget where you are and how beautiful it is. You forget how to appreciate simply being alive.
Going for a walk when you are feeling anxious in an open green space can do wonders. If you are surrounded by buildings living in a metropolitan area looking up to the clouds will have the same effect.
I do not know exactly what it is about the clouds, but they make me feel small and large at the same time. I realize how MASSIVE our planet is and how little I am in comparison. But it also makes me realize how little my stresses truly are and how amazing and blessed I am to even being able to witness the clouds and their movement.
They provide me a sense of peace, my body, my lungs, my brain feel clear when I look up at them.
This one may be my favorite, just give it a try.
3. Counting your breaths.
When you are experiencing anxiety to the point of heading towards a panic attack breathing is one of the best and most simple things you can do.
We often forget what to do in moments we feel like we are dying, to breathe.
Count your breaths, in your head or out loud. At first you may be breathing fast but counting will also help you calm down your breathing to a slower pace.
Let me know what you do when you experience anxiety and if any of these exercises help you out!
